Who I am

Maker Digital is a freelance web design and development business run by Jack Watson, based in London, United Kingdom. For the purposes of UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018), Maker Digital is the “data controller” responsible for the personal data described in this policy.

If you have any questions about this policy or how your data is handled, you can email me at jack@makerdigital.uk.

The short version

I only collect the information you choose to send me through the contact form, and I use it for one thing: to reply to you. I don’t sell your data, I don’t share it for marketing, and I don’t pass it to anyone other than the service providers that help me run the form and deliver your message to my inbox.

What information I collect

When you submit the contact form, I collect:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • Your current website address, if you choose to provide one (optional)
  • The content of your message

To protect the form from spam and abuse, my hosting and security provider also processes limited technical information automatically, such as your IP address and basic request details. This is used only to tell genuine visitors apart from automated bots.

I don’t use analytics or advertising cookies, and I don’t track your activity across other websites.

Why I use it, and my lawful basis

I use the information you send solely to read and respond to your enquiry and to correspond with you about it. My lawful basis for this is:

  • Legitimate interests — responding to enquiries from people who contact me about my services; and/or
  • Taking steps at your request before potentially entering into a contract.

I won’t use your details to send you marketing unless you’ve separately asked me to.

Service providers I rely on

To run the contact form and deliver your message, your data is processed by a small number of trusted providers acting on my behalf (as “data processors”). They only process your data to provide their service to me, not for their own purposes:

Your message is then stored in my own email account so that I can read and reply to it. I do not sell, rent, or otherwise share your personal data with any other third parties.

International transfers

Some of the providers above may process data on servers outside the United Kingdom (for example, in the United States). Where that happens, appropriate safeguards — such as UK-approved standard contractual clauses or an equivalent transfer mechanism — are in place to protect your information.

Cookies and local storage

This website does not use tracking or advertising cookies. It stores a single preference in your browser’s local storage to remember your light or dark theme choice — this stays on your device and is never sent to me. Cloudflare’s spam-protection tool may set a strictly necessary cookie to confirm that form submissions come from a genuine visitor.

How long I keep your data

I keep contact-form emails for as long as is reasonably necessary to deal with your enquiry and to keep a record of our correspondence. When they’re no longer needed, I delete them.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data I hold about you
  • Ask me to correct inaccurate data
  • Ask me to delete your data
  • Object to, or ask me to restrict, my processing of your data
  • Request a copy of your data in a portable format

To exercise any of these, just email me at jack@makerdigital.uk and I’ll respond as soon as I can.

Complaints

If you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled your personal data, please contact me first so I can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk.

Changes to this policy

I may update this policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with a revised “last updated” date.
